The Supremacy Of Christ
This morning we’ll begin our new message series studying through the book of Colossians. This book was actually written as a letter from the apostle Paul to the church that had formed in the ancient city of Colosse. Paul is the author of 13 of the 27 books that make up the New Testament and Colossians is one of his shortest letters. It consists of just 95 verses spread across four chapters. Despite its short length, Colossians is loaded with important doctrinal teaching on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Paul is writing to a church that he has never personally visited, and yet he takes a very personal interest in their life and well-being. He is clearly concerned about some specific forms of false teachings that have arisen within the church. These false teachings included: works based salvation, a denial of the divinity of Christ, and the worship of angels.
The apostle crafted this letter to counteract false teaching and help the Colossians keep their focus on Christ. Paul understood an important principle: The best way to recognize false teaching is to know the truth about who Christ is and what he has done. And that’s exactly what today’s passage does. It provides us with a powerful doctrinal teaching on the person and work of Jesus Christ. This is important because without a proper view of Christ, you’ll struggle to put your faith in Christ Alone. There will always be a temptation to add something else to your salvation.
