The Book of Acts, Lesson 23: So Close, Yet So Far

Oct 26, 2025    Steve Byrens

In Acts 24, the apostle Paul stands on trial before the Roman Governor named Felix. As part of his defense, Paul shares his conversion story and how Jesus Christ has changed his life. A couple of days later as Felix and Paul are talking, Paul shifts the conversation to God’s righteousness, the need for self-control, and the coming judgment of God. Luke records for us that Felix begins to feel frightened and convicted by Paul’s words. In an effort to regain control, he dismisses Paul and promises to have future conversations about Paul’s claims concerning Jesus Christ. Sadly, there is no record that the future conversation ever took place. Even though Felix was briefly convicted by the Gospel message, the cares of life ended up drowning out the Spirit’s voice.

Unfortunately, this same pattern is very common in our culture today. That’s why we need to take the message of this passage very seriously. When it comes to salvation, the most dangerous place to be is close to the Gospel without genuinely receiving its message. The warning is clear, do not put off trusting Christ for your salvation!
