Immanuel- God is With Us
Several years ago there was a popular song by a singer named Joan Osborne that posed the question: “What if God was one of us?” Although I don’t necessarily recommend the song, the question is a good one to ask. Right now, as I am experiencing my life today, what would it be like if God were to come to earth and live in our midst? Would His presence make any difference in what I’m going through at this moment? At another point of the song Osborne contemplates another question,” If God had a name, what would it be?” Once again, I think this is a good question for us to consider. Throughout the Scriptures, whenever one of God’s people would experience a new level of God’s provision and power working in their life, God would reveal Himself to that person through a new Name. A Name that helped remind the person of God’s ability to meet them in their time of need. It was a clear indication that God is always present here with us.
The good news for us this morning is the questions that Joan Osborne sang about, the same questions about God, which so many people wrestle with, have been clearly answered through the Scriptures. As we will see in our text today, when Jesus was born on that first Christmas morning two thousand years ago, revealing His Name as “Immanuel.” The question about whether or not God is here with us has been settled!
