Paths of Righteousness
As believers, we have something in common with some of the great Biblical heroes of the faith: Men like Jacob, David, Samson, Peter and Mark. Like them, we love God, we’ve wandered away from God, and we’ve been brought back into fellowship with God. It is the very nature of a sheep to try to wander and stray, believing we know better than the shepherd. It’s the nature of the Shepherd to chase after and restore His sheep.
It is not surprising then that King David, who got so far away from God, would take great pleasure in writing Psalm 23. He uniquely understood the sense of relief that comes when, instead of being left behind and rejected by our Shepherd, He chooses to rescue and restore us from the messes we’ve made. Today’s passage reminds us that we belong to a Good Shepherd who has committed Himself to our loving care. This truth should cause us to want to live in a way that points others to the goodness of our Savior!
