The House of the LORD

It is common in today’s world to refer to life as a journey. And in reality, that’s not anything new. Hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, the Greek poet Homer used this metaphor while writing the classic literary works known as the Iliad and the Odyssey. Through these beautifully poetic texts, he argued that the journey is the whole point of life. In modern terms we would say, “the journey is the thing.”

But as we finish our study of Psalm 23, it becomes clear that King David would disagree. David does value the journey. But he emphasizes the destination more than the journey, because the destination is the LORD Himself! I believe King David's description of life as a journey leading to intimacy with a loving Shepherd, is far more attractive than that described by the poet Homer. It is also far more attractive than other views that are constantly being peddled today: Just collect the right toys - Or get the right plastic surgery - Or get in with the popular crowd - And your journey through life will be amazing!

It is my prayer that by the time we finish this message, we’ll all have a desire to push past our obsession with the temporary things of this life and to view our journeys the way that David describes his in Psalm 23: As God’s children we have every reason to travel through this life, and even through death, confidently expecting to experience the goodness and mercy of our Loving Shepherd!
