The LORD is My Shepherd
The longer I live, the more I’m convinced that no matter how much we accumulate in this world, it never seems like enough. In fact, people can have everything this world has to offer, and still not feel satisfied. King Solomon said it this way in Ecclesiastes 5:10 (NLT), “Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!” But, it’s not just money that doesn't truly satisfy. There is nothing that can satisfy the passions of the human heart apart from Christ!
I believe this is why the 23rd Psalm (The Shepherd’s Psalm) resonates so powerfully with our hearts today. When David wrote these words, he uniquely understood the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep. David was a shepherd boy who had been responsible to care for and protect his family’s flock. He knew full-well how important the loving care of a good shepherd is to the health and well-being of his sheep. Without his provision, they would suffer and eventually die. Only the shepherd could provide the things necessary for the sheep to find contentment and rest.
In the same way, our Good Shepherd (Jesus Christ) provides everything we need to experience health and well-being in our lives. Through today’s passage we will discover a beautiful truth: When you look for your satisfaction in the LORD, the deepest needs of your heart will be met!
