Life in an Unjust World
As we pick up our text in the second half of Ecclesiastes 3, we find Solomon wrestling with the problem of widespread injustice in this world. This is a question that leads many people to struggle to believe in God: Why does a good God allow so much injustice in the world? If we are going to represent Christ in this world, suffering and injustice are subjects that we all have to try and make sense of.
It’s important to remember that these are not just theoretical questions either. They become personal ones when we see suffering and injustice right in front of us: A single mother who's been abandoned by the father of her children, a little child who is singled out by his mother for abuse, a friend who's fired for standing up for his beliefs.
These types of situations leave us asking: Why doesn’t God bother to intervene? Why doesn’t God step in to help tip the scales? Why does it often seem like God is letting the bullies of this world win? After wrestling with these questions, King Solomon points us to an important truth: When we feel overwhelmed by the injustice and oppression we see in the world, we can trust God to ultimately judge and set things right!
