Preparing Our Hearts
One of the great ironies of the Christian life is the fact that we can do all the good things the Bible tells us are important, but do them for the wrong reasons. When this happens, we can end up missing God because we’re more focused on ourselves than we are on Him. When we make life all about us and our own preferences and desires, we can fool ourselves into thinking that makes us free. But the truth is it always leads to bondage, because whatever we put our hope in controls us.
That’s why there’s so much freedom found in the words of Psalm 40:8 (NLT), “I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.” How many of us would like to have this experience with God? To be able to honestly say, “I take joy in doing your will!”
Down through the centuries, Christians have wrestled with this same question. And repeatedly returned to the same answer: If we want to be conformed to Christ’s will, we have to make our hearts fully available to Him. The best way to do that is through the spiritual disciplines of fasting, prayer, and worship. Today as we study these important Christian disciplines, we’ll discover a life-changing truth: The key to a life that pleases God is the condition of your heart. Whatever you give first place to in your heart is ultimately what you worship!
