The Virtues: Lesson 3 - Temperance, "Strength Under Control"
One of the greatest battles we face as believers is not always the opposition around us, but the desires within us. Temperance reminds us that self-control is not about white-knuckling our way through temptation, but about surrendering our hearts to the Holy Spirit daily. In a world that celebrates impulse, comfort, and instant gratification, God calls us to live differently—to be people whose lives are marked by restraint, wisdom, and obedience. True freedom is not found in doing whatever we want, but in being mastered by Christ instead of our flesh. Just as walls protect a city, temperance guards our hearts, our words, and our actions from destruction. Through the power of the Spirit, we can learn to stand up to ourselves, bringing our desires into alignment with God’s will and becoming people who reflect the character of Jesus in both strength and control.
