KidCity & Youth Assistant
Hey Church Family!
My name is Katrena Whitcomb. I was raised in the small town of Bellevue. I was homeschooled along with my 3 siblings, and grew up going to church where Pastor Steve was my Youth Pastor, such a small world!
I heard all the Bible stories growing up, but the sacrifice Jesus had made for my sins didn’t connect to my heart until one night in youth group. I remember wanting to not just hear about the love of God but to experience it! To not just have faith but to live in faith, to change my life of going through the motions and completely walk with Him, to be a better person and example to others, so I gave my life to Jesus and got baptized.
Throughout my teens and young adult life, I tried to follow His word the best I could. In 2011, I went through a divorce that shook my faith. I asked God all the “why” questions, but I didn’t understand how this happened when I tried to follow God and live my life for Him. I turned my back on God, thinking I knew what was best for me —that I could handle my own life and make my own decisions—selfishly trying to walk in my own strength. I soon found out just how wrong that was and just how weak I am without God.
In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul talks about boasting about our weakness, so that the power of Christ can work through me. Jesus said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” I knew I needed God in my life and that I am nothing without Him! I was raising 2 young boys by myself, and I wanted them to know the Lord, and I wanted us to be a family who sought after Christ.
I met my husband Chad in 2016, and we became a family! We wanted to attend a church that we both felt spoke the truth. We found City on a Hill and instantly felt at home! We then had our daughter, Kassidy, complete our family!
I started serving in KidCity shortly after and realized helping to raise up the next generation is my passion and where I am called to be. With homeschooling my 3 children, I have a love for teaching, for pouring into the hearts of all ages that walk through those doors, whether on a Sunday morning in KidCity, or a Monday night at Youth Group, seeing them smile when they learn something new, watching them connect the teaching and apply it to their lives and to pray with and for each of them if they are struggling or in need.
I love seeing the beautiful hearts they grow up to be and seeing God work through the lives of these children. I am so blessed in all the ways the Lord has worked in my life and to be a part of this church body and to be serving in our KidCity and on our Youth Leadership Team!
